Our goal is to give everyone an excuse to talk more; breath more; laugh more; do more. By combining fitness, friendship and an emphasis on #nofilter, brkr. has the potential to reconnect the world through something other than politics, memes or social media. With connection at our core – and yours – brkr. makes fitness be the by-product and connecting  be the source; encouraging friends and eventually strangers, to use a virtual environment to share real, authentic, energy together. Jump, drop, breathe, pant, laugh, sweat, yell and cry – all the things that can make working out feel vulnerable and private – are the very same things that can equally make you feel familiar, comfortable, safe, and accepted if you can share it with a friend who goes through it with you. Using brkr. isn’t intended to only be a place for the unwavering fitness elite, unattainable by most people without strict monitoring, meals plans and 24/7/365 commitment. Brkr. can be an addition to everything else you already do (or don’t), a once off, or your every day; whoever you are, brkr. should make you feel naturally, and fundamentally included.

The Reason

Having travelled solo for most of her life, the Founder Zoe was never in the same place for more than a few weeks at a time, and a regular schedule was basically impossible. Keeping motivated to stay fit was a daily battle and whatever it was, was always done alone. Not dissimilar to the world we are living in right now, it is hard staying accountable by yourself and it can also be very lonely. Zoe realized as her solitary workouts grew solemn, and the unused local gym membership became ever less feasible, she had to figure out a solution.

Not having disposable funds to pay a trainer every day, nor being in the same location to workout with friends or a regular training partner it finally clicked  – she simply needed to be able to stay connected with the people in her life and capitalize on what she already had desperately wanted – to have more time together, and squeezing in a workout at the same time too. The idea for an app where you could workout whenever, however, and with whomever you wanted, whilst also being WHEREVER, was a no-brainer. Being able to train together – from a distance – be it in your own homes, hotel rooms, airbnb’s overseas or two parks on other sides of the world – means being able to train tougher, but also means keeping your friends accountable no matter what the circumstances or schedule.

The concept for brkr. filled Zoe with the determination to use connectivity, accountability and inclusivity to brk through barriers, brk down people’s boundaries and also brk a sweat.

Three years, a lot of late nights and early mornings later, the idea has become a reality, at a time that has been a true test of people’s commitment to fitness, as the world, and all of it’s gyms, closed its doors for the first time in three generations. As people’s perceptions of home workouts slowly broadened, so have our previous ideas of what fitness and friendship means to us. With brkr. we are resolved to turn isolation into motivation and separation into communication; whether apart by distance or by circumstance, brkr. has the capacity to bring us together in such a simply fundamental way, we will all wonder how we didn’t do it sooner.
